Summary:
Field oriented control has been proposed as a useful technique to achieve a high dynamic performance induction motor drive. No matter what formulation is chosen to present the problem, namely, an input-output transfer function description or a more detailed state variable approach, a set of variable directly related to the magnetic fields within the motor is necessary. The paper starts off with a mention of direct air gap flux sensing methods mainly for historical reasons. The paper then goes on to look at rotor flux linkage vector estimation using an open loop scheme in field coordinates, this being the most popular technique. This method has some additional advantages if a field oriented controller is to be designed. The attention of the work is focused on the expected time constant of the estimation error. The study points out the advantages that the use of feedback in the estimation algorithm may bring in terms of the error dynamics.
